West Virginia Ski Resorts Reboot Winter

Charleston, WV – This week’s cold temperatures have allowed snowmakers at all of West Virginia’s Ski Resorts to get back to work, covering the slopes with manmade snow. Winterplace in Raleigh County and Timberline Ski Resort in Tucker County have both resumed on-slope operations today, joining Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County and Canaan Valley Ski Area also in Tucker County, in offering skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in West Virginia. Oglebay Resort in Ohio County is currently making snow and will open soon.

The natural snowfall in the state’s mountains also allowed West Virginia’s Nordic areas, White Grass Touring in Tucker County and Elk River Touring in Pocahontas County to provide cross-country skiers a chance to get on the trails.

Due to the state’s resorts extensive snowmaking capabilities, West Virginia continues to offer the most open terrain for skiing and snowboarding in the southeast region. The snowmakers at all of the state’s ski resorts can produce manmade snow whenever temperatures permit, allowing the industry’s unsung heroes to cover the slopes for skiers and snowboarders. When snowmaking conditions are at their best (in the low teens), over 20,000 tons of snow is being produced in West Virginia per hour, enough snow to cover 20 football fields with a foot of snow each hour.

Meanwhile, January is being celebrated as National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and all of the state’s resorts have special deals for newbies to learn to have fun on the snow. Today, all of the resort’s are celebrating National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Day.

West Virginia Ski Resorts Return To Snowmaking

Charleston, WV – This week’s cold temperatures have allowed snowmakers at all of West Virginia’s Ski Resorts to get back to work, covering the slopes with manmade snow. West Virginia Ski Resorts Prepare For Cold Temps

Charleston, WV – The recent mild temperatures have created some challenges for West Virginia’s Ski Industry. Despite still having the most terrain open in the southeast region, that includes, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland, a number of slopes have had to be closed. Winterplace and Timberline Ski Resorts have suspended on-slope operations until temperatures drop which will allow snowmaking to resume. Winterplace officials plan to provide skiing and snowboarding again this Friday, as subfreezing temperatures are in this week’s weather forecast. Timberline officials have indicated they will also reopen when snowmaking resumes and the slopes are covered.

In the meantime, January is being celebrated as National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and all of the state’s resorts have special deals for newbies to learn to have fun on the snow.

Additional WV Ski Resorts Open For Season

Charleston, WV – Two more West Virginia ski resorts will open for the 2018/19 season this weekend as Canaan Valley Ski Area in Tucker County and Winterplace Ski Resort in Raleigh County are set to begin offering skiing, snowboarding and Snowtubing on Saturday. Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County which opened over the Thanksgiving holiday, will be opening its Silver Creek area Friday. Oglebay Resort in Ohio County and Timberline Four Seasons Resort in Tucker County are planning to open on December 21.

The natural snowfall this month has also provide cross-country and snowshoeing opportunities at White Grass Touring Center in Tucker County

With the holiday season bearing down on the state’s ski industry, the recent cold temperatures have allowed the resort operators to make snow covering an abundance of terrain for the skiers and snowboarders. The upcoming three-week holiday season (week before Christmas, Christmas week and week after Christmas) contributes up to 35 percent of the various resorts’ yearly revenue.

The snowmakers at all of the state’s ski resorts can produce manmade snow whenever temperatures permit, allowing the industry’s unsung heroes to cover the slopes for skiers and snowboarders. The state’s alpine and cross-country ski resorts and areas attract over 800,000 visitors annually during a normal weather-related season. “The season has gotten off to a positive start and our phones are ringing, with people eager to get on the slopes,” says Terry Pfeiffer, President of the West Virginia Ski Areas Association and President of Winterplace. “All of the resorts will continue to aggressively make snow whenever possible, guaranteeing visitors to the mountains a white Christmas.” The top states providing skiers and snowboarders to West Virginia slopes are Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The ski and snowboard season traditionally, weather permitting, continues from Thanksgiving through early April. The five-month long ski season in West Virginia has an estimated economic impact of over $250 million and 5,000 jobs at the resorts and other related companies. This season Winterplace has continued the commitment to improving snowmaking by installing over 6000 feet of new “snow making” air and water supply lines. Terry Pfeiffer, Winterplace President stated  “Snow making upgrades over the years have allowed us to reduce  our start-up time for snow making and have resulted in one of the most  efficient snow making systems in the industry.  These investments support our core Goal of “Providing one of the finest skiing experiences in the South east”. “Once it turns cold we can cover the mountain with a blanket of snow allowing our guest to get to the Fun Faster”!

“Winterplace purchases top of line Rental Equipment”.
With a focus on those new to the sport, Winterplace has purchased additional top of the line Rossignol skis and snowboard’s to add to their rental fleet.  Having state of the art rental equipment combined with Terrain-Based Learning™ (TBL) learning areas is key to having a successful experience.  Winterplace is the most southern resort committed to Terrain Based Learning™ (TBL)TerrainBasedLearning™does away with the traditional defensive approach to traditional ski lessons. Winterplace is partnered with “Snow Operating” the developers of Terrain Based Learning™ to bring this award winning methodology to their slopes.

Season Pass benefits expanded
Unlimited access to the slopes is one of the main reason for a season pass. Winterplace is rewarding these loyal pass holders by providing some additional perks for these frequent users.
